Renovation of an old ryokan in Sendai.
The garden was planned using only existing elements from the original Japanese-style garden, rearranging and repurposing them. New meanings and relationships were established for the stones, handmills, lanterns, trees, and building foundations found through the excavation works. These new relationships form a variety of scenes which unfold while moving through the garden, from the gate to the entrance of the lodging room, and leave the remnants of the old garden for the guests to experience.
When the garden is seen from inside the restaurant, a large view of the landscape opens up, with the horizontally shaped pine tree, 'garyu no matsu', as its center piece, and it subtly reveals seasonal changes to the viewer.
